Alexander Calder
Vache (Cow), 1929, steel wire
I chose Alexander Calder’s steel wire sculpture called Vache (Cow), because the design is simplistic but effective. The most successful aspect are the single lines that curve into interesting shapes like the circles and spirals. I believe the least successful aspect of the piece is that it looks too flat. I plan to incorporate some of the twists that he used into my own piece. (left)
Elizabeth Berrien
Year of the Horse, 2014, steel wire
I chose Elizabeth Berrien’s steel wire piece called the Year of the Horse, because it’s beautiful and very realistic. The most successful aspect of the horse are the connected circular patterns that make up the entire piece. I am inspired by this and I don’t see anything unsuccessful. I would like to incorporate the interconnected pattern into my giraffe project to make it more full looking. (right)

Diane Komoter
Jezebel, 2010, steel wire
I chose Diane Komoter’s steel wire work Jezebel because it reminds me of a Picasso painting. The most successful aspect of it, is that although it’s abstract, it’s still recognizable as a female face. I enjoy the cartoon features, however, the least successful aspect is that it’s flat and I want to avoid that in my piece. I would like to incorporate the swirls into the spot pattern in my project. LaVern David Thompson
Piano, 2021, steel wire
I am influenced by LaVern David Thompson’s steel wire sculpture called Piano, because the artist created a good example of a fully three dimensional piece using just simple lines of wire. The most successful aspect of the piece is the two-toned colored wire that makes the white keys stand out. The least successful aspect is the detail on the lid because I’m not sure if it’s suppose to be music notes or a reflection. I’d like to incorporate the use of the smooth curves of wire into my piece. (right)

Rene Romero Schuler
Jindy, 2021, steel wire
I chose Rene Romero Schuler’s stainless steel wire piece called Jindy because although it’s created out of tangles, it shows a lot of detail in the dancer such as her dress, hair and face. The most successful aspect is the small motion of her leg which has a big impact on the piece. I think the least successful aspect is the round edge of the skirt. I would like to incorporate the use of slight movement into my own piece (left).
